Our  mission..

“To end the decades-long practice of overpricing and put homeowners back in control.”

Firstly, why should you read these tips and advice ?

    • Over 30 years industry experience in the Home improvement industry.

    • We have a burning passion to STOP the completely outdated “over quoting and drop close” tactics.

    • It’s time for a new ethical and fair way to buy home improvements that’s genuinely going to save people a boat load of money.

Why is overpricing so common in double glazing & other home improvement sales ?

Simple answer. The massive majority of sales people in the industry are self employed and commission only, or they have a small basic pay but with large commissions on sales.

But the amount of commission paid to sales reps depends on the actual amount they sell the job for!

So most major companies including Anglian, Everest, Safestyle etc all operate this system with a “Sliding Scale” of commissions so the higher the sales rep sells the deal to the customer, the more he or she earns in commission!

So this is not actually the salespersons fault, it’s the companies policy of sliding scales price list in tandem with the sliding diminishing commissions encouraging sales reps to sell at the highest possible price they can.

How to spot these common sales pressure tactics & avoid over paying for your home improvements.

The most common sales tactic traps to avoid falling into..

Some of the hidden psychological tricks salespeople use to inflate prices and get you to rush into signing on the spot. So, here is HOW TO AVOID falling for these 1980s style sales tactics, designed to force you into bringing your decision making forward.

    • 1. The seems too good to be true price that’s “only available today”

    • OUR TIP. (It will still be available next week)

    • 2. The “Phone my manager” justification close.

    • OUR TIP.. This price will also still be available next week.

    • 3. The “You can be a Show-home” trick.

    • OUR TIP. Any extra discount applied in return for this offer will not disappear over night.

    • 4. The “1st in the postcode” offer.

    • OUR TIP. It makes no difference to the product price whatsoever if you’re the 1st, 2nd or 100th installation in an area or postcode.

    • 5. The “you help us we help you” marketing promotion.

    • OUR TIP. Made up by marketing managers to again, justify trying to rush a customer into deciding there and then.

All of the above sales gimmicks are purely designed to try and get you to sign there and then and not get other quotes to compare.

Price Anchoring

There is a powerful psychological principle called “Price anchoring”, it works, and that’s why it has been used by salespeople for decades.

Firstly, the most widespread and common tactic used in 2024 and 2025 to get customers to accept a deal while the sales rep is in the house providing their quote, is by simply delivering a highly inflated first price that usually shocks the potential customer and therefore makes the attractive (windows/door/conservatory/fascias/driveway etc), products now seem completely out of reach price wise. Therefore attaching a premium perceived value on those products.

Here is an example of why price anchoring is a powerful aid to getting a sale.

Example.. So imagine you drive past a used car showroom every morning on your way to work & back , and for 3 months they have your absolute favourite model in the main window, its your dream car, its in your favourite colour, with all the extras you’d love to have, now also picture the price tag you have seen for 3 months and you also know, that the reason you haven’t stepped foot inside that showroom is simple, its priced way above your budget, both cash and monthly.

Then one day you’re on your usual commute home and there’s a bright sign splashed across the showroom entrance, “CLOSING DOWN SALE. ALL CARS NOW 60% OFF”

Now what is the likelihood of you at least popping into the showroom for a look at your dream car ?

More likely than the day before right ?

So in a situation like this, the car could be an absolute bargain and you may indeed have just been “in the right place at the right time”.

This is based on one thing and one thing alone, “the perceived bargain price drop”.

But consider this, how do you know that the price of the car was correct 3 months ago, its been sat in the window for now at least 90 days, nobody has bought it, even though the front display window of a car showroom is premium sales real estate!

It’s also now 3 months older and so its value cannot have gone up in that period, but maybe it really is “Right place at the right time” and you can grab a bargain!

Why this is relevant to home improvement sales tactics ?

Now lets go back to home improvement sales, a sales rep is in your home to measure up and leave a free quote, and you have every intention of getting comparison quotes to check its a good deal, so why is it that an industry average of 1 in 3 customers buy on the first reps visit ?

The answer is often, price anchoring sales tactics..

A magical offer or promotion will be available (“but only while I am here with you tonight”) now making the lovely products he or she demonstrated earlier cheaper and now seem like a perceived bargain!

This is Sales Tactic number 1 & variations of it include variants of all of the above 5 seemingly genuine promotions.

THE KEY TAKEAWAYS

FACT 1. THERE IS NEVER ANY REASON THAT YOU HAVE TO DECIDE IMMEDIATELY OR RISK MISSING OUT ON A GREAT DEAL. THE DEAL WILL STILL BE AVAILABLE IN A DAY OR WEEK OR EVEN A MONTH.

FACT 2. THE MARGINS ON WINDOWS, DOORS, ANY GLAZING PRODUCTS AND FASCIAS AND GUTTERING CAN BE EYE WATERING! SO A DEAL CAN BE NEGOTIATED A LONG WAY DOWN FROM THE PRICE THE REP HAS QUOTED YOU.

FACT 3. “MOST HOME IMPROVEMENT SALES REPS WORK ON COMMISSION—THE HIGHER THE PRICE YOU PAY, THE MORE THEY EARN. DISCOUNTS LOWER THEIR COMMISSION, SO YOU ARE RARELY IF EVER OFFERED THE BEST DEAL UPFRONT.

FACT 4. ALL SALES PROMOTIONS IN THIS INDUSTRY ARE ENGINEERED FOR ONLY ONE REASON TO HELP CLOSE THE SALE IN THE HOUSE DURING YOUR “FREE QUOTE VISIT”, SO DO NOT FALL FOR THE BULLYING TACTICS IF YOU WANT SOME TIME TO THINK IT OVER, OR TO GET OTHER COMPARISON QUOTES, STICK TO THAT.
